Dug Down Deep by Joshua Harris (Publisher: Multnomah Books)
This book explores the deeper meaning behind Christian doctrine, and explains the terms used to describe many of the concepts associated with it. Mr. Harris does this by using anecdotes of his personal experiences as he grew from a teenager with a superficial faith to an adult with a deeper understanding of what God wanted from him—a close personal relationship founded upon biblical truth.
Though the principles covered in this book are profound, they’re explained in simple terms. The tone is friendly and informative rather than scholarly, and there is no doubt that Mr. Harris is knowledgeable about the topics he discusses.
Mr. Harris encourages readers to dig down to the core of our beliefs to learn the truth about what God wants for us and from us. He says God speaks His truth through the Bible, revealed through the Holy Spirit, so that we may receive salvation through faith that Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross fulfilled God’s need for justice. Jesus took the place of sinful humanity, and gave up his life in atonement for all our sins.
This book held my interest and made me stop to think about my own beliefs. There was so much to absorb that I couldn’t finish it in one session. I especially liked his explanation of the ultimate purpose of our salvation—”to unite all things in Jesus, things in heaven and things on earth.” (p. 88)
I would recommend this book to anyone who desires a deeper understanding of the Christian faith and biblical principles.
